Really nice and quiet place, Billeting staff was nice and friendly. If using Garim GPS with down loaded Famcamp POI's ..it will take you to prison instead of campground, when you get to prison entrance just continue up the road till you get to Camp San Luis Obispo. Really enjoyed this place.

I have stayed at about 10 military campgrounds now and this is the worst. I drove up to the Billeting office to check in. The lady running the office saw me pull up with my rig. She walked out of the office, locked the door and passed right by me. It was her lunch time and she was not about to miss lunch. I had to sit for over an hour waiting for her to come back. I have never been treated so rudely at a military campground. The good things about this park: 1) close to Hearst Castle and seal beaches, 2)on base dining facility, $5.00 per meal at breakfast, lunch and supper. The grounds look nice. Again, only 4 full hook-up. The sewer is difficult to get to unless you are in the correct lane leaving the park. The shower house/restroom facilities are horrible. The grass is grown up around the ladies room - my wife was afraid to even enter it. The men's room has a community shower with 3 shower heads. No toilet paper in the heads. There is a paintball course adjacent to the park so you may hear some gun shot sounds. This park is only useful as a short stop over. It would never be a long term destination camping spot. I am not sure I will come back to this park.

We drove through the campground. Grassy areas, clean and well kept-up. Ditto the comments of Feb 5 - 10, 2010. Great location along the coast. Just across the CA1, is a regional park that charges $30 for full hookups.
Feb 5-10, 2010
Only four full hook-ups which can cause a problem with gray water dump in smaller rigs. I used my trailer shower because the women's shower area needs major improvements and I didn't feel safe in there by myself. Dining facility was a major plus! Great food and great price. I ate dinner there every night. Location is perfect for day trips to Hearst Castle, elephant seal beaches, Morro Bay and surrounding area. Lots of wineries and town of San Luis Obispo and Pismo Beach all 30 minutes or less away. Very quiet area and clean. Will go there again.

Since our last stay the National Guard has upgraded all the electrical hook-ups from 20amp to 50 amp service. They have installed partitions in the male latrine to take it from a 1940's open style community bathroom. As stated in another post, a new dining facility is open to retiree's and meals are $5 for B/L or Dinner. In 2010 they plan to move the PX from it's current location to a
larger facility across the street. Hopefully more usage will increase the profits as well as increase the hours of operation. The National Guard was unable to purchase materials to expand the water/sewer hook-ups. Had they been able to purchase the materials, they would then have coordinated for Air Force Prime Beet to install the hook-ups during their AT at CSLO. What a nice project for a local veterans group or philanthropy, raise and donate about 65K and re-dedicate the park to those who serve!

Pretty much level crushed gravel and dirt parking sites which are very well spaced. Rained several days so we had some mud issues to deal with. Picnic table and fire ring at each site. Bathrooms are OK but old and in need of updating and renovation. Very quiet in the evenings and no lights shining in our windows, which we like. Small exchange is open three days a week but they don’t have very much there. Barber shop and laundromat is across the street. If the building is locked you can get the key from the main gate guards. Small book exchange in the Billeting Office. Retirees can eat meals in the dining hall for $5 each per meal. They always have a good variety of food and it’s prepared very well. Lunch is the best. San Luis Obispo is a great area to visit. The downtown area is very crowded and if you have a large vehicle as we do, it is very hard to find parking. After 5PM parking is free. We used an outside lot on the corner of Morro and Palm streets. Metered during the day but after 5PM it is also free. The Firestone Grill is a great place for a sandwich and beer.

Used this as a point to view the Morro Bay/Cambria/Hearst Castle area. Location: Like most of the comments, this park is a bit out of the way, but quiet. Clean/Hosp: Gate sentry very nice and friendly, due to holiday, check in/out closed until our check out. Park very dusty during frequent windy conditions. Restrooms very old and rundown, but working. Amen/Fac: Most base facilities were closed or on very limited hours of operation, even during non-holiday times. There is a small PX and a very nice golf course (off base, across street) as well as El Chorro park across street. If not wanting a resort style stay, for the price, this is a good value.

Great campground, very quiet. We stopped for a one nighter without reservations and got a site with full hookup. Staff was very helpful, especially the guard at the main gate who recommended an Italian Restaurant the Palazzo Giuseppe in SLO that was absolutely outstanding.

ALL PREVIOUS REVIEWS ARE ACCURATE.. WE FOUND THE TWO NIGHT STAY JUST FINE WITH ONE EXCEPTION... NO SEWER HOOKUP, ONLY FOUR OF THE SITES HAVE SEWER. WE MADE RESERVATIONS A FEW WEEKS AHEAD FOR FULL HOOK UP..OR SO WE THOUGHT. ON ARRIVAL, WE WERE TOLD THAT WE DIDN'T HAVE A SITE WITH SEWER... OK, ONCE WE PARKED WE NOTED ONLY TWO OF THE FOUR SIGHTS WITH SEWER HAD RVs, SO MAYBE THEY WERE RESERVED FOR SOME ONE COMING LATER... OF THE 12 SITES THERE WERE ONLY 6 IN USE, INCLUDING OURS.. AND THAT'S ALL THAT WERE USED FROM FRIDAY UNTIL WE LEFT SUNDAY NOON. NO BIG DEAL, BUT NO EXPLANATION EITHER??? THE NEW MESS HALL IS WONDERFUL, GOOD FOOD AND SERVICE TOO!! TOM & BONNIE

We telephoned ahead to this park. The tents are put in the overflow area which have no tables or firerings so we continued on south to Vandenburg AFB famcamp. We appreciate the lady telling us what our conditions would be like.

There are 12 RV pads of which 4 are E/W/S, and 8 with E/W. All pads are very level. Each site has a fire ring, picnic table, and a grass area. 20 amp service only. There is a dump site at the campground. The campground is mostly surrounded by tall trees and bushes. Best pads are 6, 12, 5, 11, all E/W/S. There is a grassy overflow area on each side of the RV pads, but overun with squirrels. One nice suprise is the small herd of deer that live on the base and come by the campground morning and evening. The public restrooms/showers are still vintage 1940's. I was here on a drill weekend so there were helicopters flying daily until around 22:00 hrs. But I didn't mind since I'm a retired Army helicopter pilot myself. Love the sound of that Huey! I'll be back again! Steve L.

Good stop over location for visiting the local attactions. Everyone on post is friendly. Set up a tent in the overflow area and it was nice and quiet. The restrooms reminded me of Jump School, Fort Benning in 1970 where the toilets were all next to each other with no walls. There was plenty of hot water in the shower though. Overall I enjoyed my stay.
Mar 31- Apr 1, 2008
Great place for an enroute stopover. Stayed in the overflow area, simply a large field (watch out for the squirrel holes)! Office folks very friendly and helpful. Restrooms are a hoot; my dad was stationed there in 1942 and would feel right at home today.

THIS IS A GOOD PLACE TO VISIT! THE PEOPLE IN BILLETING WERE ACE'S! SHARON AND HER CREW MADE YOU FEEL "WARM,FUZZY"!!!!!! SHE WAS VERY HELPFUL! IT WAS OUR FIRST TIME USING FAM CAMPGROUNDS AND THIS PLACE MADE IT SPECIAL! IT WAS EASY IN PULL THRU! WE HAVE A 35'CLASS A NO TOW CAR SO WE HAD TO STAY! THE SHOWERS WERE FROM WW2, REMINDED ME OF MY TIME AT FT LEWIS! THE ONLY DRAWBACK WAS THE 20AMP SERVICE BUT NO BIG DEAL! IT WAS SO QUIET YOU COULD HEAR THE SQUERRILS SNORE! THE PX WAS OKAY IN A PINCH! IT IS VERY PET FRIENDLY! THERE WERE PATROLS BY MP'S AND YOU HAVE A SAFE FEELING! WOULD STAY THERE AGAIN IN A HEARTBEAT!!

First: Awesome location! Second: Facilities are not up to military standards. As active duty, I can say the MWR's need to realize this is a GREAT business for them to get into. As with all campgrounds there are PRO's/CON's, and this campground definitely has their share of both. My family and I took our MH and stayed in Site 9. The sites are very large and we loved that. The base was quiet...we loved that as well. Did I say awesome location?! Some CON's: ridiculous hours for the Post Exchange, Barbershop...and gym is OFF BASE! With all this we will DEFINITELY being going back. IMO the PRO's way outweigh the CON's. And I agree with OLDWEB.... SHHHHHHH... this is a well kept secret.
March 22 - 25, 2007
Nice quiet campground, although it only has 20amp electric. Luckily, it didn't rain on us, as we can see how the sites and roads would be a big muddy mess. The office staff was very friendly. Bathrooms/showers are from WWII and are terrible! (look at the photo). There really aren't any facilities or amenities. Price is WAY TO HIGH for this campground, especially for only 20amp electric.

The campground is in a great location. If it rains, the roads are somewhat muddy.

I would definately recommend the base if you are in any type of govt-state or fed person or military branch. The accommodationns for the RV park are very clean and nice and very spacious. I also stayed in the billeting sector which has very nice rooms that include hotel style, apt style, they even have houses on the property that the price was so UNREAL that no other hotel could beat it!!!!!!
Oct 2006
Great place to stay grounds are clean and large close to everything.

SHHHhhhh. This is a well-kept secret if quiet, casual, freindly, small, uncrowded, inexpensive (and seasfood) is your fancy. Clean, neat, large sites with nice grass pads and fire rings (even fire wood) surrounding each. Tree barrier rings the small campground for added quiet, and no airplanes or manuevers. 15 minutes from El Morro Bay with its impressive "rock" and bay. Large embarcadero with seaward activities and seafood restaurants and tourist shops. Beaches in the area and the wonderful coastal CA 1 drive north. SLO is excellent town with all amenities nearby. Weather is part of the secret, clear and not-cold during the winter and early spring when SoCal beaches are clobbered. True the hookups are underpowered (for AC) but adequate for most uses. Rumor: this winter upgrades to 50amps and sewer. This could spoil the "secret".
