Description

Military RVing travel club. Originally founded as a retired military RVing club has recently opened the Associate Membership category eligibility to HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS. The club has structure consisting of local chapters, geographic & at large regions, and a national staff, and holds musters (military term for RV rally) at the local, regional and national levels. The club currently has over 1600 members, over 50 chapters, 9 regions, with activities throughout the USA. See S.M.A.R.T. application at: http://www.smartrving.net/become-a-member.html The club is in the process of updating their documents to include this new category of membership eligibility.
They also run RV caravans comparable to commercial caravan companies but at significantly reduced cost (about 50% less). S.M.A.R.T. regularly runs caravans to Alaska, Maritimes, Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta, and usually has 2 to 4 additional caravans each year. Planned 2011 caravans are: Alaska (65 days); Canadian Maritimes (60 days); Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta(11 days); Oshkosh Experimental Airshow/Wisconsin area(21 days); Music Cities-Nashville/Memphis/Branson(18 days); Grand Circle Southwest (30 days); possible others. See more information in the club’s magazine “The Traveler”, available on the club’s website: http://www.smartrving.net
S.M.A.R.T. welcomes those who enjoy seeing the country we defended. More info on S.M.A.R.T. can be found at http://www.smartrving.net

At the 13 September 2010 National Muster it was announced that the membership vote passed to include Honorably Discharged Veterans into the Associate Membership Category of membership. See the website: http://www.smartrving.net/ for information about the club. They hold local, regional, and national "musters" (rallies) around the USA. They also run caravans comparable to commercial company run caravans. You can also see the club's magazine and get to a membership application at the website. They are updating all the club documents to include our Honorably Discharged Veterans.

Discussions

Lets try again - what to discuss? Who is planning on attending National this year in OK? We will be there.

We left Fairchild AFB today, and are in Bothell on the North side of Seattle for the next week. We plan to arrive at the National Muster site in Lacey on the 11th for the Fulltimer Chapter pre-muster activities and BOD meeting. Paul

Welcome, Terry! Check out SMART at the National website at www.smartrving.com. There are links there for Regional and Local chapter orgainzations. Most local chapters have regular "musters" somewhere in their geographic area, and would welcome you to one of their activities.

I just found this group on the Military Campsite webpage. I didn't know about it. I'm retired Army and looking at getting a travel trailer in the near future and this definitely sounds like an organization I would be interested in.

March 2011 National Travel Coordinator Notes from Natl Travel Coordinator Craig Christen We currently have only 13 SMART members signed up for the Alaska Caravan-WE NEED A FEW MORE FOLKS TO SIGN UP BY 1 APRIL to make sure we can go--we are SO close! This is the adventure of a lifetime! You can take your non-SMART RVing friends (or guests in your RV) along on this 70 day high value/low cost superb caravan. Don't let fuel prices get in your way—the extra fuel costs are only a small percentage of the total costs—our SMART caravan is about 50% of the per-day cost of a commercial caravan (and lower total cost) and you get to travel with your great like-military minded friends at a much relaxed pace.
There are currently 4 great caravans still planned for 2011. You can still sign up for the SW Mini-Grand Circle 30-day in May, 70-day Canada & Alaska in June, and 19-day September Music Cities caravans. The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta caravan is full with a few standby folks. Please sign up early for them. We had to cancel the 30-day Oshkosh, WI, Experimental Aircraft Association Airshow in July and the 65-day Maritimes caravans due to lack of sign-ups. If you are coming to the National Muster in Shawnee, OK from the east, please consider the Music Cities Caravan thru Nashville, Memphis & Branson, just before the National. All of these are roughly 50% of commercial caravan per day costs—and you get to RV with fellow military minded folks—“Seeing the country we defend”
In 2012, we are planning on resurrecting the Mardi Gras caravan!!! Last one was before Katrina and the previous SMART Mardi Gras caravan were usually sold out! We need folks to sign up NOW so we can make the deposits on this GREAT caravan—look on the SMART website for registration info. We also are planning for a possible 2012 Colorado Adventures caravan that will include many of the special trains of Colorado in addition to other great Colorado area adventure activities. We will have to look at AK & Maritimes for next year due to this year’s small number of sign-ups for each. We hope that the low-cost--high-value caravan program helps bring in new SMART members.

Welcome Pete!! SMART does sponsor some very good caravans, normally at much better prices than you can get elsewhere. The Alaska Caravan is one of the best, and I just heard last week that a new Mardi Gras caravan is in the works! The best place to get current info/updates is at the SMART website at www.smartrving.org. This forum is "unofficial", and info here will normally lag a bit behind the official SMART website.

I am a new member to the group and website. Will I be receiving information about the musters and caravan schedules or will the information be posted on the website?

I am retired (DAV) from the AF. I hope to do some traveling soon. We have an Aliner pop-up at this time but will probably get something larger if the wife likes the camping bit.

Looking forward to meeting some of you folks.

Pete

New member to this group, and the website. I became fully retired in 1999. My wife and I have always been avid RV travelers, even with four kids in tow, but have been slowed down to a stop in recent years due to health issues. Two of those kids now travel in our footsteps, so to speak, in their own RVs.
Hopefully we'll get out again someday, and use this website as a guide.
BCNU on the road, maybe.

Hi, all my name is Curt Toms, my wife Dianne retired after 20 years active duty in the Navy. We have been traveling with our fifth wheel named Norman. We spend our summers in Millinocket, ME near the beautiful Baxter State Park in the North Woods. We spend winters in Carriere, MS and visit our son in San Diego where we stay at Lake O'Neill Campground on Camp Pendleton. Hope to sell our winter house and spend more time traveling this year. This site has been invaluable source of information on bases as we drive across the country from West Coast to East Coast to Gulf Coast. May God Bless us all as we travel and keep our active duty/reserve brothers and sisters safe.

After 23 years, My family and I are vacationing 8,000 from San Diego to Virginia, I need all the help I can get. Our first stop was to breakdown in LA, AAA towed us to Ventura for service, and we are waiting to get "Caroline" Back. The brakes (master cylinder, hydro something and rotors need replacement).

Been in Ventura since last friday, it appears we will start our trip a week last and a couple thousand dollars poorer. bummer.

Just curious, did SMART ever allow typical VETS to join yet?
