My son will go downrange in a few months and I would like to know what to expect in the way of communication with him. How often will he be able to call? Can he take his Vonage modem with him?

Thanks for all your answers. He is home now and the communication was sparse for us but he was a Medic and was in a bad place. Im sure yours will be better John. :}

My son is in Afghanistan right now (he gets home next Monday...YAY!!) I don't know about Vonage, but between Skype, Facebook chats, and Yahoo Instant Messenger, I was able to stay in regular contact with him during his entire tour. Of course, he's Air Force and the base has a pretty robust communications infrastructure. I'll know better when my grandson gets there next Tuesday with the Army. I'm not expecting nearly as much communication with him as I had with my son, but who knows? I may be pleasantly surprised.

I am currently downrange in Iraq and am very surprised at the commo available. I am able to Skype home regularly and phones are also available. I use a DSN line to contact the states and then the call is transferred to a local number or to a calling card. I don't believe they are quite there in Afgan. but not sure. I am retired and working as a contractor here until April.

I'm quite sure...the only thing if where he's going has a block on vonage put on by the host country or the us...he has to take the modem and plug up the phone to find out...only way to know vicky..
