I have ridden RFTW twice. I recommend the Southern Route, the people are much friendlier and laid back, I started on the Central, 2008 and left the gestapo attitude and went to the Southern. I have since talked to friends on the Central that the gestapo attitude and participants have been purged, but still recomment the Southern Route.
For what it's worth. RFTW is great experience wouldn't miss it for any amount---I only wish my health would allow me to continue the RUN, I try to see them off each year, but cannot sustain the rigors of the everyday RUN, alas.
Camping is grueling experience-did it 2008 all the way. 2009 roomed with a advance team veteran, would not do any different----the room is much better than the ground. Also the 7th platoon central and southern (trailers, trikes, sidears, etc.) are always the last to arrive everwhere, and the last in line for gas, food, and restrooms---keep that in mind, when you decide to pull your trailer.
If you can get the tailgunner job in 7th platoon, it would be a boon for you, then you get to the front of the gas line upon arrival at gas stops. Not much of a perk when you figure you are arriving with NO-ONE behind you. I was a tail-gunner in 09, best job on the run---loved it.
