Bill & Jean O'Dell replied to the topic Re: Military Installation Access in the forums. Most bases will let anyone with an ID into the post because it would be too difficult to screen out the people that work on the base like the people that work at Burger King and all of the other little shops on the base and the people that work for the contractors. For example I have a grandson that is 17 and works stocking shelfs at the commisary and only works 3-4 hrs. a night. He has to get a temporary vehicle pass to let him on the base with his car. Other than that his driver licenses does it.

Bill & Jean O'Dell replied to the topic Re: Veterans use of FamCamps! in the forums.Gesuhan,
I don't know where you are at or who you are talking to about getting an eye exam but Tri-care does pay for eye exams (routein)every two years. That is from the regulation. You need to contact Tri-care and talk to a supervisor about it. Someone is giving you the wrong info. As I have stated before on this forum, my wife and I have had routein eye exams for over 25 yrs and never paid for one yet. Tricare has paid for them every time.

Bill & Jean O'Dell replied to the topic Re: Veterans use of FamCamps! in the forums. In response to floridakamper, If they don't have optomitrist here at Ft. Leonardwood to do the exams, then they send us off post to get the exam from civilian Dr's and they pay the bill every two years. That is active and retired. They also do exams for contacts for us retires when needed. I wear contacts and have exams done here for years free.

Bill & Jean O'Dell replied to the topic Re: Veterans use of FamCamps! in the forums.Someone above made the comment that tricare don't pay for the eye exam. I am 65 yrs. of age and have never paid for a eye exam. I am retired army and get a eye exam at least every 2 yrs., which is what tricare will pay for. Sometime I get it sooner because Ft. Leonardwood don't care how often we get them. If you check with tricare you will find that it is authorized to have a eye exam every two years and be paid for. They will not pay for the glasses except the retired military can get glasses from the military side of it for free. That is the gospel, at least at Ft. Leonardwood, Mo.

Bill & Jean O'Dell replied to the topic Re: RV Technical & roadside assistance in the forums.I've had coachnet for many years and used it once for a flat tire. They responded quickly and done what they needed to do and it didn't cost me a dime. One thing to remember is that if you are in a motorhome maybe that is why AAA didn't work for you very good. They are probably not prepared to handle motorhomes.

I am now within 1 month of my CLASS A RV purchase and need some specific help. This Saturday I am going to look at these 3 RV's and wanted to get your opinions. I was wondering why the 38' Sports Coach had a small HP engine then the other 2.

2000 - Winnebago - Chieftain 36ft. Slide-Out Diesel Pusher

You asked why the sportscoach has a smaller HP engine than the other two. In my opinion it is only that years ago when it was manufactured I think they tried to put the smallest engine that would do the job in hopes that it would sell the customer only because it has a diesel engine. Even though it may not pull the weight it needed to pull it was diesel and cheeper than the larger diesel engine. It may do the job that you need it to do but not the next guy. Drive it and see how much power it has. It may work for you. I think I would stay away from the coaches with the basement air conditioner. They are very expensive to replace.

Bill & Jean O'Dell replied to the topic Re: Dental work in Mexico in the forums.Yarbees,
We use the Yuma Proving ground military campground every winter and visit Mexico about twice a month while there. What else do you want to know? The dental work in Mexico is about 1/2 the price that it is in the US. Just be careful when you visit the Dentist because they may try to get you to do work that is not needed. If you know you are having trouble with a certain tooth then have it fixed. I know many of my friends who have work done. My wife and I have dental insurance so we don't. Good luck on your decisions.

As a retired nurse, I can tell you that it is a professional ethics breech on behalf of the nurse. It would be a report to the state ethics branch. It is probably not against the law but certainly ethics, unless something happened to the individual like really sick or death.

Bill & Jean O'Dell replied to the topic Re: New to RVing and have questions in the forums.Valdez, I have been rving for 35 yrs. with all of the different types of rv's and have only needed a extension cord for the rv one time. If you don't buy it, someone at the campground will probably have one to lone you. The addapters you will need about every time. I personally use the type of surg protector that you plug into the post but the most secure one is the one that is installed. I worry about the one I have being stolen but that is a chance i take. I would not see any reason you could not live on your salary on the road. If the bills are paid, it would be cheeper to live on the road than in a stick house. Just stay put in one place longer say a month at a time.
Good luck,
Bill

The same as you we were told to unlock every outside door and leave them open and to go inside a room and couldn't come out or go to the bathroom for almost 2 hrs. Couldn't go back to the RV for any reason either. It might just be the way they were taught to do it.

Bill & Jean O'Dell replied to the topic Re: How to camp in Key West? in the forums. When we were there a few years ago, they did have blue boys to loan to you for dumping your tanks. In Dec. thru March you would be in dry camping for 2-3 wks at a time before comming up for the full hookup sites. I would want a generator because I enjoy some electric at times. You could get by but not comfortably. Buy a small generator to take with you and enjoy it.

We want to visit Key West. We know Sigsbee this time of year is full and everyone, if they stay, go to dry camp at Trumbo. So, we have many questions about what it's like at dry camp. Is there a restroom/bath facilty there close by? Do I need to have one of those dump carts to drain each day, or are there some there to borrow? We don't have a generator, but could possibly last a few days on battery. What do others do?
What has been the experience of rotating to Sigsbee in mid to late March? We are flexible in our timing? But we wonder when folks begin to leave the keys and spaces begin to open up.
Thanks in advance for any information and tips.

Hi a retired Canadian Military Member, 37yrs + here and first post on the forum. My wife and I were planning on staying in some of your base campgrounds this coming June along the eastern seaboard while touring Civil War Battle fields. After reading some of the post on the forum I am not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling. It appears some resent Canadian military serving or retire and outsiders taking camp sites. I think we will change our plans and start looking at commercial/Good Sam campgrounds.
For those of you wondering about Canadian Bases with campgrounds, I only know of one, here in Petawawa On., Black Bear Campground. All are welcomed. www.cg.cfpsa.ca/cg-pc/Petawawa/EN/Facili...kBearCampground.aspx

I would like to see a negative criteria for excessive cost.
It is very poor to have FAMCAMPs raise prices by 30% in five years ($15 to $19) for no reason. We surely didn't receive cost of living of 30%. I can obtain camping fees of $9 and $10 outside the gate with AOR and RPI respectively, and I firmly believe after 24 years of service my membership dues are paid. I don't see where their expenses, or lack thereof, require their fee schedule. They have no costs for real estate or high costs for maintenance. A discount for Golden Access (offered by many FAMCAMPs) or reduced fee is more important to a fixed income retired enlisted than painted rocks, a dog wash, dog run, or wifi.
I would like to see negative criteria for stupid policies, e.g., no washing of rigs, no firearms, etc.
- Where do full-timers wash their rigs? On-base residents wash their cars two blocks away.
- Where do full-timers who own legal guns check them before entering the Base/Post to purchase fuel, shop at the Commissary/BX, or stay in the FAMCAMP? Base housing residents have firearms in their quarters, there are Rod and Gun Clubs on base hosting skeet ranges, they even sell guns in the Exchanges, but we retired military can't have a firearm in our home?

Bill & Jean O'Dell replied to the topic Re: Switch from Direct TV to DISH Network in the forums.Skyking8 After buying several of the HDMI cables at different prices I was talking to a salesperson at a well known store about them and why they had so many different prices on them. The cable has several different levels of wiring in them. Usually the more they cost, the better grade of wiring inside of the cable. The better the wiring, the more clearity of the picture you receive. I personally don't see much difference in the cables but some say they are noticable. Each for their own.

There isn't enuff specific info here for me to help, plus I'm a Direct TV customer all the way. What I'd like to contribute to this issue is about HDMI cables which are now the "in" thing.
If anyone would like to save a bunch of money on the purchase of a HDMI cable, then I would respectfully suggest that you do so via an online retailer. If you go to Wal-Mart or similar store to buy one, you will pay about $30. If you purchase online from some place like NewEgg.com you can get the same cable for $5.

Bill & Jean O'Dell replied to the topic Re: Switch from Direct TV to DISH Network in the forums. You didn't say if you are using a roof dish or one on the ground. That would help in telling you what to do. I know that if you are using a roof dish with a single lnb you will have to change the format to have it go to dish. I changed from dish to direct several years ago and had to change everything. It was a long process. Also another thing is the wiring in your M/H probably is not compatable with the new wiring for HD and etc. That is why you have to use the HDMI instead of the other wiring. It requires a different cable. Hope you get it done.

Bill & Jean O'Dell replied to the topic Re: taking up camping spaces when traveling elsewhere in the forums. There are times that maybe someone wants to go on a cruise and needs to leave their rig someplace with electric. If the rules allow them to stay at a place for that given time frame and they pay the fee, what is wrong with them leaving it there? We personally left our rig at the base in Tacoma Wa. last spring to go on a Alaska cruise for 10 days. I see nothing wrong with it as long as the campground allows it.

Bill & Jean O'Dell replied to the topic Re: !00% Service Connected in the forums. If you wanted or needed to get care from a VA hospital while traveling, it would be good to have the ID card. Also, some states Oregon for example, give 100% disabled free camping for so many days a month. If you need medications on the road you can have them mailed to you through the VA.

Wayne, you just need to go to the nearest VA either hospital or clinic and have your ID card made.
It is pretty simple.

I was at Davis Monthan one year when the voting was going on and they actually take notices out and hand them out to the campers in the campground and the ones coming into the campground. It sure makes them a lot more votes. I don't think the voting is fair because of the way it is gone about. That is just my opinion. Not that the campground is not a good one but there are others that are just as good but don't have as many visitors there at the time of the voting.
